Knights of Blindness: Lions and the Preservation of Sight

Every journey begins with a single step. One act of service, one vision screening, or one gift of corrective eyewear can restore clarity, independence, and hope.

For more than 100 years, Lions have championed the cause of vision, carrying forward a legacy born from Helen Keller’s historic call for Lions to become "Knights of the Blind." Today, with a global network of 1.4 million members, Lions continue to lead the fight against preventable vision loss. Sight is fundamental to daily life, learning, and economic opportunity, yet millions of people suffer from avoidable blindness or uncorrected visual impairments.

Lions serve to prevent avoidable blindness and improve the quality of life for people who are blind or visually impaired. Across towns and cities worldwide, Lions conduct free vision screenings for schoolchildren and adults, collect and recycle millions of pairs of eyeglasses, and fund critical surgeries for cataract removal. Additionally, Lions support low-vision clinics, mobility training, and guide dog initiatives to help visually impaired individuals live with dignity and independence. Through persistent service, Lions ensure that no one is left in the dark.
